Mats Andersson is to step down as the CEO of Sweden's AP4 pension fund, meaning the pension sector will lose one of its leading advocates for sustainability.
Andersson has overseen the shift of many of AP4's assets into low-carbon alternatives, and he has been instrumental in forming the Portfolio Decarbonisation Coalition, which has attracted $600 billion of assets, smashing its $100 billion pre-COP21 target.
His endeavours saw him scoop Environmental Finance's Personality of the Year award last year.
He has told the board that he plans to step down after 10 years in the role, but will stay on until a successor is found.
"During the past ten years it has been a privilege, together with all the talented and dedicated employees, to advance the Fourth AP Fund to a position with the highest returns and the most fund capital of the AP Funds," he said. "It feels natural at this point to hand the baton to someone else".
He added that his next challenges will be non-operational, saying he had been offered work with the Global Challenges Foundation, which highlights some of the biggest problems facing mankind including climate change. He is already a board member.
AP4 chairman Monica Caneman said: "Mats Andersson has very successfully led the work of the Fourth AP Fund during his 10 years with the fund and the Board regrets that Mats will be leaving. We wish Mats luck with his future endeavours."
