The second wave of winners of Environmental Finance's Green Bond Awards hail the market's big issuers and innovators.
The awards aim to recognise those that dominated the market either through the size of their issuance programmes or those that broke new ground and helped take the market to new levels.
For the second year running Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) was named the biggest underwriter of bands for the year.
China Industrial Bank won the award for biggest bank issuer reflecting China's dominance in the market in 2016. Elsewhere, Iberdrola was the largest corporate issuer, while New York Metropolitan Transport Authority won the accolade for biggest municipal issuer. The European Investment Bank (EIB) was named the biggest issuer for Sovereign, Supranational and Agencies (SSA) for the second year in a row.
The first sovereign green bond issued by Poland towards the end of the year picked up two awards. In addition to Green Bond of the Year – SSA, announced on Friday, it also won Innovation of the Year – Bond Structure. Obvion also won a second award, adding the award for Innovation - Use of Proceeds to its award for Green Bond of the Year – Asset Based Security.
Efforts to nurture the Latin American market saw Brazil's Green Bond Guidelines recognised as Initiative of the Year.
SEB's head of climate and sustainable financial solutions, Christopher Flensborg, was the individual who mattered the most to the market, taking the Personality of the Year Award.
There was a total of 25 awards this year, compared with the 15 that were up for grabs last year, as the number of in order to reflect the rapidly expanding market.
The winners were decided by a panel of judges, with the exception of awards for biggest issuers and underwriter which were calculated using data from Environmental Finance's Green Bond Database, made up of some of the biggest green bond investors in the world.
The awards, which cover 2016, aim to recognise best practice, or issues that were significant in the development of the market.
The award winners are being announced in three waves, on the on 7, 10 and 11 April.
