Brief description of the data offering

Sustainability Stewardship and ESG Integration

For over a decade, Minerva has pioneered the integration of sustainability governance factors (which includes environmental and social issues) in its research. Minerva is fully self-supporting in its analysis of climate change, ESG and sustainability factors. As a specialist ESG research and data provider in our own right, we have direct access to in-house quality data. In addition to the governance database which supports our proxy voting services, our ESG datasets also encompass:

  • Sustainability governance: understanding how companies manage financially material sustainability issues including climate change, health and safety, board competence, reporting quality;
  • Controversial business activities: companies deriving revenues from tobacco, thermal coal extraction/generations, civilian firearms and controversial weapons;
  • Climate change: are companies explicitly managing their carbon footprint with Paris-aligned targets and objectives; and
  • ESG controversies: companies which have breached UN Global Compact norms with material ESG impacts.

The content of the above datasets includes the following:

  • Products data: Alcohol, Adult Entertainment, Controversial Weapons, Conventional Weapons, Farm Animal Welfare, Fossil Fuels (Coal and Oil Sands), Gambling, Recreational Cannabis, Tobacco.
  • ESG and Climate data: Bribery and Corruption, Climate Risk, Environmental Damage, GHG Emissions, Human Rights, Labour rights, SDG Integration, other ethical controversies.
  • Minerva Ratings: Governance, Remuneration, Sustainability.

Companies are analysed to identify their most material ESG issues and gaps in ESG management, primarily based on external data from a range of high-quality sources, supplemented by other partnering organisations (e.g. TPI, TCFD), desk research and review of the company’s disclosures.
