Brief description of the data offering

Our climate solutions provide investors with research, data and tools to identify, assess and manage climate-related risks and opportunities.

Morningstar Sustainalytics’ Low Carbon Transition Rating is a science-based assessment tool developed to help investors understand how prepared companies are to meet their net-zero commitments.  Expressed as an Implied Temperature Rise, the ratings offer investors a contextual signal that shows a company’s exposure to transition risks based on its emissions and management performance.

Morningstar Sustainalytics’ Physical Climate Risk Metrics help investors understand their direct and indirect exposure to physical climate change, and the potential financial impacts to their portfolio companies. With coverage on over 12 million assets, investors can leverage Physical Climate Risk Metrics to manage their portfolio exposure, fulfil reporting requirements, and prioritise topics and companies for engagement activities.

Fossil Fuel and Carbon Solutions Involvement: Provide insights into companies’ and portfolios' exposure to climate-related activities. 17,000+ companies and 60,000+ funds are covered.

Carbon Emissions: Backed by best-in-class multi-factor regression models, provides investors with insights including company historical Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon intensity and footprint, and data to analyse and disclose the portfolio’s weighted average GHG emission intensity or footprint. Some 16,000 companies and 60,000+ funds are covered.

Where and how do you source your data?

The data source varies depending on the data point. We leverage reported emissions wherever available or use internal estimation models. For the data used in management indicators, we use publicly available data or data sourced from direct questionnaires where appropriate and possible. This is all done via a mixture of AI-enabled data mining supplemented strongly by human research and quality control.

Asset location data is drawn from numerous proprietary and public databases to search company names, trading names, and subsidiaries, including both owned and leased operational assets worldwide. Hazard risk data based on two climate change scenarios is generated with XDI’s Climate Risk Engines. To translate the physical climate risk metrics into financial losses, we use key financial metrics sourced from Morningstar’s financial report databases.
