Brief description of the data offering

Sustainable Fitch’s ESG Scores are asset-level, granular, short-form proprietary ESG assessment products that are assigned to entities. The ESG Entity Score is designed to indicate the specific business’ overall impact on the environment and society, together with a view on the effectiveness of governance ESG Scores are not an indication of the financial materiality of ESG to an entity’s or instrument’s credit profile, nor are Scores relative only within industries.

We assess each entity on an individual basis, taking into account the diversity within sectors as demonstrated by our sector distribution data. This nuanced methodology allows us to ensure precision and fairness in our evaluations, recognising that entities within the same sector are not homogeneous. Our tailored analysis stands in contrast to the sector-wide generalisations often employed by our competitors, providing a more granular insight that supports the standardisation of practices and actively combats greenwashing. At the core of our scoring is factual data extracted from those activities and the analyst’s assessment of material ESG considerations. Our assessment is not an industry-based analysis, but it is customised on the impact of the entity's revenue-generating activities.

For the assessment of environmental alignment and impact, we refer to major science-based taxonomies such as the EU Taxonomy for Sustainable Activities and the Climate Bonds Initiative. For social factors, we refer to the social aspects of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The taxonomies provide science-based technical screening criteria, while the SDGs and their associated targets provide an indicative social objective. Governance is assessed using an in-house methodology, measuring the effectiveness of governance policies and structures. For scoring, our analytical approach is informed by internationally recognised organisations, such as the OECD, and relevant best practices.
