Providing environmental, social and governance (ESG) data on 94% of the global market capitalisation, spread across more than 15,500 companies from over 100 countries Bloomberg ESG Data looks to provide holistic information and combine ESG data with other investment factors.
To be included the data must represent 80% of company operations and at least 80% of the company's workforce.
Along with data company Riskthinking.AI, Bloomberg last year launched on its terminal and Data License platform, physical risk indicators that account for every climate scenario endorsed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
The indicators combined Bloomberg's data on one million physical assets with Riskthinking.AI's dataset of global climate change projections to allow users to assess their exposure to floods, droughts, wildfires, and other climate vulnerabilities.
Bloomberg's data range also includes a transition risk assessment tool (TRACT), which projects how future revenues will shift according to a range of climate scenarios. The tool covers more than 70,000 companies across eight climate scenarios, providing revenue exposure for each.
"With 40+ years as a leading data provider for financial markets, Bloomberg has unique expertise providing trusted and high-quality sustainability data designed for investment workflows," said Nadia Humphreys, head of Sustainable Finance Data Solutions at Bloomberg. "Bloomberg incorporates ESG data from multiple sources and provides superior interoperability so firms can look at their ESG data holistically and in combination with other data factors for comprehensive decision making."
For emissions Bloomberg collects data, Scope 1, 2 and 3 on more than 6,000 companies, which report this, and provides estimates on a further 130,000 using a proprietary machine learning model, which leverages more than 800 data points for companies that don't self-report.
To assess corporate climate ambitions, Bloomberg provides metrics that measure greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets into an implied temperature rise aligned with specific climate objectives. These metrics cover over 7,700 companies with officially reported data.
One Sustainable Investment Awards judge commended its "great coverage" [and] unique advantage integrating ESG within Bloomberg platform," as well as its "great usability and strong client support".
As the mandatory Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) comes into force Bloomberg will expand both its company reported and the breadth of its ESG data.
