FTSE Russell, an LSEG business, has been named as winner of the 'Climate index provider of the year' at this year's Sustainable Investment Awards 2024 with judges praising its entry as a "stand-out submission" in this category.
The index provider has undertaken a number of activities over the past year or so to strengthen its credentials as a leading provider of climate-focused solutions.
In March 2023, the index provider launched a new series of indices to help investors align their fixed income index strategies with the goals of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. It said its FTSE Fixed Income EU Climate Benchmarks Index Series goes "beyond the minimum requirements" and also consider clients' additional goals and offer the opportunity for potential customisation.
Furthermore, FTSE Russell continued to expand its FTSE Fixed Income Ex Fossil Fuels Enhanced Index Series, launched in 2022, to include high yield, emerging markets, and the Asian broad bonds space.
In addition, to working closely with Scottish Widows, Osaka Exchange, HSBC, FTSE Russell's ongoing partnership with the Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) has continued to support asset owners and investor in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
FTSE Russell has been TPI's data partner since 2017 and collects data for its TPI Management Quality Score. It also contributes to the evolution of its methodology as a member of its Technical Advisory Working Group. This partnership has resulted in a growing range of TPI indices incorporating data from TPI and its own climate data sets, expanded in 2023 to include emerging market and Australian indices. One judge said its relationship with the Transition Pathway Initiative was a "hugely important feature and contribution" .
Solange Le Jeune, head of equity sustainable investment product at FTSE Russell, said: "There's no single way of addressing the climate change related challenges that investors face. So, when we sit down with our clients, we listen to their priorities and objectives, and tailor solutions to arrive at the right outcomes. In our business—the provision of indices and benchmarks, together with the associated data and analytics—partnership is increasingly important.
"We work closely with asset owners and keep ourselves informed of their investment needs and objectives, so we can develop cutting-edge solutions to help advance the climate transition. This collaboration has led to the integration of new ideas and datasets into our climate indices across equities, fixed income, listed real estate and infrastructure."
