North Sky Capital impressed the judges in two categories in the Americas region at this year's Environmental Finance Sustainable Company Awards.
US-based North Sky Capital manages impact funds with more than $1.3 billion invested for environmental and social impact.
In addressing methane emissions from landfill, North Sky has as part of its Sustainable Infrastructure strategy invested in organic waste handling, anaerobic digestion, and methane facility upgrades
Adam Bernstein, managing director at North Sky Capital says these initiatives support the circular economy as organic waste is converted into renewable natural gas (RNG), fertiliser and animal feed.
North Sky invested in two waste-to-RNG facilities in 2022 – one in North Carolina and one in Rhode Island – in addition to upsizing its investment in a California wastewater-to-RNG facility initially launched in 2020. These projects alone could produce 1.1 million MMBtu per year of RNG, according to North Sky.
"We are immensely proud of these investments," commented Bernstein. "For 20 years, North Sky has been a pioneer for sustainable investing with the goal of achieving attractive returns while also creating positive environmental and social benefits.
"We have been fostering innovation and practical solutions across a broad spectrum of impact sectors such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, energy storage, renewable fuels, recycling, and water reclamation and reuse. We are honored to receive this award in recognition of our leadership in RNG and wastewater and thank our hardworking employees and project partners.
"We are playing an active role in financing the global transition to a more sustainable future and appreciate the recognition of our sustainable infrastructure projects which support, advance, and improve the circular economy across the US," added Bernstein.
"This was also a fantastic team effort, not only from the North Sky team but also from our outstanding development and corporate partners, project builders and operators, government agency authorities, and our site hosts. We share this award with all of those great people and with our forward-thinking investors."
